Weddings, Marriage, Love!

The first week of summer has been a productive one for me. I just finished editing my latest wedding video that I shot on March 17. I have started working with Starfruit Productions doing larger weddings and commercials.
Summer of love!

Final Ringling Project

As my first year at Ringling comes to a close, I've been thinking about all of the crazy projects that I did this year. I have grown so much as an artist and been exposed to things I never knew of before coming here. I am so thankful for the time spent here and the wonderful artists that I have met.  However, for various reasons I have decided to transfer to UNC School of the Arts to continue my study in film and concentrate on directing.

Anyways, back to my last project for my studio classes. A couple posts ago, I talked about building my own camera lenses: http://quarkandbeans.blogspot.com/2012/04/diy-lenses.html
This is the final film made with those lenses.
Please share it if you enjoy it! This summer, I'm going to be trying to make either a mini-series or a short film about once a week, so subscribe to my youtube channel to get updates! Oh and now I have a twitter, so follow me or something.... @rlebar

New short film!

This is my final project for my freshman class: cinematic storytelling.
We were required to make a film with three scenes and no more than four lines of dialogue.

I hope you enjoy

DIY Lenses

I have spent the past couple weeks building my own camera lens and body for my final project in my two studio classes. I've spent time learning about optics and bought a couple lenses from http://www.surplusshed.com
The end product will most likely be a film. I'm still not quite sure what about.
Here's a few pictures of the lens and a couple test shots. Things look pretty cool!
I'm going to make a compound lens next to get a wider field of view.

I started off with a bellows I found on Ebay for $10
Then I cut the bellows off the rails and got a ball and socket to allow for tilt and swing capabilities with my lens.

I love the color fringing and selective focus and the washed out colors of the lens!

Einstein's Dreams

About three weeks ago I finalized the script for my project based off of a journal from Einstien's Dreams- a book of fictionalized dream journals that explores what Einstein might have been dreaming about while developing the theory of relativity.
I had a lot of fun experimenting with time-lapsing in the beginning. The last week I've been experimenting with my good friend After Effects.
I hope you enjoy it.

Interactive Dream Art

This is a mixed media interactive dream project. We recorded our dreams in a dream journal for a few weeks and then we had to make something inspired by them. I wanted to make the experience novel for every viewer.
The piece is three sequences and they all must be viewed through an object.
The first sequence, the viewer is forced to lay on their stomach and put their face up to a snorkel mask. The experience is pretty cool when all lights are turned off and you are interacting with these objects and sequences.

The next sequence, the viewer must look through a pair of binoculars that is about 13 feet away from the display.

The last sequence, the viewer must kneel down and look through a key hole to see the movie.

Time lapsing all dayy erryydayy

I've been experimenting with time with my new project based off of a journal entry from a book called "Einstein's Dreams". Here is the intro to the film that I'm making. I should be done with the movie by next week.

A moment at the movies- by Ryan Lebar

After many weeks of critiques and tweaks, my first short film for Cinematic Storytelling is finished. Although it was a frustrating process and some of my voice was lost in the film, I am happy how it turned out! I used one key light with a blue gel and one back light and shot with my friend's 85mm Rokinon f1.4.
The requirements of the film were: no dialogue, all close ups and it must be one or two pages long.

FPS override

Parallelism editing/ experimenting fps override with the new Magic Lantern firmware. I shot this with n 85mm lens at 4fps with a 1/24th shutter. If you have a Cannon DSLR, I encourage you to check out the magic lantern software! It's incredible. http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wiki

Week 8: Laughter

Vibrations
I stumbled upon this old art gallery and film screening building this week. A contractor was inside renovating the building for a new owner. He let me walk around and take pictures.
This used to be the projection wall where art films were screened. I overlayed a sound wave of someone laughing on the wall as I'm sure there were countless comedies shown here.
I wish I could have stumbled upon this place when it was thriving with art and film.

Week 7- Light

 Seven years, waiting
Week 7- Light
My friend and I went back to the location that we shot the last scene in my last film "navel.". It is a closed, abandoned golf club. It was spooky and we might have heard weird noises but I got a really eerie photo. The chair was positioned like this when we got there; looking out of the only window in the whole building that was not covered by ply wood. After some research I found that the golf club closed in 2005. The most interesting thing about this place is that there is no sign of life. What happened here?

Micro-fiction

This is the description of the project.
I experimented with different images and thoughts. The mood wanders toward dark humor.
working with after effects, adding sound
Take your 250 word MICRO-BIO-fiction from Thinking Time. Clothe, pose, and re-photograph the character.  Record your story as voiceover. Create a second soundtrack in After Effects using only sound effects. Experiment with spatial sound mixing, creating left/right stereo pans, echo, and reverb. Edit your photographs to the soundtrack.

Narrative Collage

Here is the description of the project:
Bring in examples from Fine Art, Photography, and Film of the figure as identity. In class, use the figure to draw gesture and poses which communicates the psychological aspects of: Identity / 1st person, The “Other” / 2nd person, Context / 3rd person.  Think about the psychological aspects of drawing the figure.

Create a sequence/series of drawings of the figure. Construct a short narrative, moving from 1st to 2nd to 3rd person. Focus on revealing the identity of the character through an unfolding narrative. Display your narrative visually by presenting the images in sequence.

Goodbye Old Friend

Week 5: I left my heart in.....my childhood home.

My parents are moving to California on March 1st. I have so many great memories over the past ten years living in this house. I'm going to truly miss it.

I purchased a disposable camera with 27 exposures and took pictures of my favorite places around the house. The experience was filled with nostalgia and happiness.
I hope that the new family enjoys it as much as we did.

In the upper left is the view from my room I stayed in during my high school years. Next is my closet where we used to hide under my clothes during hide and seek. Bottom left is the creek that flowed through our back yard nature preserve; my sister and I went rafting down it after a large rain-fall. Lastly is the bat house I built my dad last fathers day.

Here is a link to a picture of all of the exposures:

Nightmare on Comedy Street

Week 3: Self Portrait
This one was really fun. I got the idea a few days ago after I had a day of ice-cold reactions to my jokes.
I bought about 10 tomatoes today and smashed them up and then soaked them in vinegar ( i thought that would make them softer...I think it did). Then I got a few friends to come over and throw them at me.
Tomato seeds are pretty tough to clean up.
Here are the best ones.
This is the one I chose.

Week 3 Photo Challenge

The theme this week was "your favorite thing"
It was a tough choice but I went with baby spinach. I can't get enough of it, I eat it every day. I might be turning green as I write this.
Here's the pic!

52 Week Photo Challenge

Last semester I feel in love with photography but this semester unfortunatly I don't have any photo classes. So, I decided to participate in a 52 week photo challenge hosted by Lens Pro to Go.
Here's how the challenge works: every week we are given a theme and at the end of the week all 500 members in the flikr group post their picture. At the end of the year a prize is given to everyone who posted every week then more prizes are given to the best photos and such.
Here we go. Every week for the rest of the year.
Week One: A self portrait without yourself in it.

This is just an extra photo that I liked

Remember A Day- Etsy Photo Shoot

My friend Jenny Rose is becoming quite the success on etsy.com for her hand knitted accessories.
To revamp her store, we shot all of her new knits. We shot over 600 shots and narrowed it down to 101 for the catalog.  Her knits are so soft and really fashionable. I loved working with her and I hope she continues to have great success!
Here are some of my favorite shots.
